Title Feedforward wind turbine control design using LIDAR / Mengling Wang.

Abstract Recent development in LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) systems, which can provide measurements of the wind upstream of wind turbine, opens a new area of research in wind turbine control. The main objective of this research project is to explore the feasibility of using LIDAR and feedforward control strategy to improve wind turbine operation. In this study, a model-inverse feedforward control strategy is employed for the pitch control. LIDAR measured wind speed is fed into the feedforward controller. LIDAR measurements and the wind speed approaching the turbine are simulated using software package GH Bladed. The transfer function representing the evolution of wind speed is developed. The feedforward controller design is based on the Supergen 5WM linear wind turbine models and the transfer function. It is augmented to the predesigned feedback pitch controller. The system outputs before and after the addition of the feedforward controller are compared. The whole system is operated in Matlab/Simulink environment. Simulation results show that combining the baseline feedback control with feedforward control is able to reduce the blade and tower loads.
